Dermal Fillers - Inexpensive Alternatives to Surgery

How can you get rid of your lower-facial wrinkles that so easily show your age? One option is a face lift, which can remove excess skin and smooth out many fine lines. Yet this can be a very pricey and very invasive procedure. There are other options that can help restore a youthful appearance while saving you from going under the knife and breaking the bank. One of the most popular and safe alternatives today is restylane.

What Is The Treatment?

Since being approved by the FDA in 2003 for the treatment of wrinkles around the nose and mouth, restylane has also been used for facial filling and lip augmentation. It can also treat forehead lines as well as plump up the chin or cheeks.

This product is made of hyaluronic acid, a natural element of the skin that helps enlarge the underlying tissues. For that reason it is very effective in restoring the face to its previous fullness and in clinical studies it has proven to produce less redness than similar bovine-collagen products. There is also very little risk of allergic reaction because it is a naturally occurring, organic substance in the human body.

Restylane is injected under the skin and the substance flows in to plump up the skin. This can help while dealing with sunken cheeks, sunken under eyes, reducing the look of deep scars, and even greatly diminishing the appearance of wrinkles around the brow line, nose, and the mouth.

But, the results of these injections do not last forever-most patients can enjoy the benefits for approximately six to nine months before needing another treatment. That is almost twice as long as the results of botox or collagen therapies.

The Procedure:

Restylane is injected at the intended spots after applying a local anesthetic. Several injections may be necessary to hit all the targeted lines, wrinkles, and scars. But the treatment session rarely lasts longer than half an hour. There may be some tenderness and a little swelling after the procedure, but generally patients can go right back to work and other normal activities with the results being immediately visible.

The Cost:

The price can vary greatly all over the country, ranging anywhere from $250 to $750 per syringe. Treatments are usually more expensive in major urban areas and certain states. It is good to remember however, that restylane is significantly less expensive than invasive plastic surgery operations, and is very cost effective because the results last so long.
